For our learning resource, we decided to create a poetry module that helps students to learn poetic devices like metaphor, simile, personification, and imagery. For this, one of the planned activities is for students to read a poem and identify specific a specific poetic device within said poem. A barrier to student success in this activity could be the potential difficulty students might face with understanding the language and vocabulary used in the poem. Poetry often contains figurative language, complex phrases, and cultural references that may be unfamiliar to students, particularly those with limited vocabularies or English language learners. Without immediate access to teacher support or peer discussions, as this could be an individual online module, students may become frustrated or disengaged if they struggle with these challenges.
There are definitely some strategies that we could use to reduce these barriers. First, we could provide activities that introduce vocabulary through interactive tools, such as vocabulary lists with definitions, visuals, and short quizzes to reinforce understanding. Additionally, we could embed glossaries directly within the poem text by using hyper-links, allowing students to easily access definitions or synonyms for difficult words. For auditory or reading-challenged students, we could include text-to-speech features to help them follow along with the poem. To support understanding of figurative language, we will break down each poetic device with simple, scaffolded examples and provide interactive activities where students can practice identifying devices in manageable sections.
