https://flourishingfish.opened.ca/ – 335 Weekly Reflections – Post 3 ~ Assessment
Hi Hanne! Great post! I can totally relate to your feelings of anxiety towards assessment. I also have felt the same sense of nervousness that I will allow this to be passed on to my students. More than anything, I want my class to be a space where my students feel comfortable and safe. For many, simply the word “assessment” is enough to take that feeling of comfort away. I love that you included the Venn diagram illustrating the different interdependent elements. I wonder what the best strategies for developing my competencies in relation to these elements would be? I want to be the best version of myself so that I can benefit my students in the best way that I can. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mady! This is a wonderful post! Your explanation of what Project Based Learning is was clear and easily understandable. As well, the example you included was a great example of PBL in younger grades. Much of the time, when people talk about PBL, it is often in reference to older grades, as it is thought that younger students wouldn’t be able to fully understand / be able to participate in PBL. Thank you for choosing an example illustrating that this is not always the case. That being said, I wonder what the youngest grade would be that PBL could be effectively incorporated. I am having a hard time imagining what this would look like in, say, a kindergarten class. Perhaps more structure? Limited options for topics? Let me know if you have any thoughts on this! Further, I remember PBL being present in our shared practicum! Although they called it “Passion Based Learning,” it was very much the same idea. I loved seeing our students work through their projects– it was so wonderful to see the enthusiasm that they had, and the joy that they were so clearly getting out of their projects. I am so sad that we had to leave before we were able to see their finished products– I bet they were amazing! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Nicole! Great post! Your explanation of Inquiry Based Learning was very well done. I understood everything that you were writing; however, the piece that I felt was the most effective, was the diagram that you included. I have always found visuals to be extremely helpful, and the diagram that you chose was clear and concise. I have not had that much experience with Inquiry Based Learning, and, to be honest, I have never really been a fan. I always found it stressful when I was given that much freedom, as I always felt that I wasn’t doing it right, or that I couldn’t come up with any ideas. I wonder what the best strategies are to help students who may feel the same way that I did. One of the most important aspects of Inquiry Based Learning is choice, and I would be interested to know how best to support my learners so that they maintain this choice, but also don’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of choices that there are. Of course, as a future teacher, I recognize that this is absolutely not the case for the majority of students. It is my responsibility as an educator to give my students access to as many different learning strategies as I can so that they can find what works best for them. I also loved how you linked this to our Learning Design Blueprint. I totally agree that inquiry is super relevant in this case. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Cassis! This is an incredibly impressive and comprehensive post. First of all, I love the topic that you guys have chosen. Cyberbullying is an incredibly important topic, and one that is becoming increasingly relevant in our modern, technology-forward society. Your explanation of the topic was very clear, and the resources that you provided were great supports. I also love that you included the misconceptions of cyberbullying– especially your second point. I fear it is all too common that victims of cyberbullying are disregarded or ridiculed because people don’t understand why they can’t just “log off.” The reasons that you provided disproving this notion were very accurate, and I appreciate that you acknowledge the spill-over into real life, as, in the majority of cases, online victims do know their bully in real-life, and oftentimes see them every day. Your learning plan blueprint is very well laid out, and very clear. I love the learning activities that you have provided– I wonder about the interactive scenario simulation. I have never heard about that before, but it sounds super interesting. I would love to know more, as it is potentially a tool that I could use in my future classroom! Overall, this is clearly a very thoughtful post, and one that I really enjoyed reading. I cannot wait to see your finished product– good luck!

Hi Frankie! I was lucky enough to have been assigned your group’s learning resource to give feedback to. I would just like to say, first of all, what a wonderful job you guys did with your project. It was clear, engaging, and very well thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed working through it, and absolutely love the topic that you guys chose. My mom had insomnia for the longest time, so I was very familiar with the topic going into your resource. That being said, I learned so much! I loved that you touched on so many different aspects of the disorder– it was very comprehensive. I love the solutions that you provided to the potential barriers that your students might face. Creating an editable template for both your journaling activity and your bedtime routine activity are great ways to ensure that students are able to effectively work on the assignments that you have given them. I wonder about students who don’t have easy access to technology, and what would be the best way to ensure that they are able to complete these assignments. Overall, I love this post, and I love your learning resource. Good luck on your final product!
